Andro R. Mathewson is a Project & Research Manager (Eyes on Russia) with the Centre for Information Resilience, a Junior Associate Fellow with the NATO Defence College, a Research Assistant to Baroness Fraser of Craigsmaddie in the British Parliament’s House of Lords, and a Research Assistant in King’s College London’s Department of War Studies.
He is a member of the Cross-Party Group on Ukraine, a Strategic Advisor with De Re Militaro, a Volunteer Forecaster with RAND Corporation’s Forecasting Initiative, and a volunteer with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
He has been a Research Officer and Capability Support Officer at The HALO Trust, where he leads open-source research into explosive ordnance contamination—particularly in Ukraine—and supports global programme development and research and development initiatives in conflict-affected regions. In 2024, he was selected as a Bellingcat Tech Fellow, during which he authored guides on the identification of explosive ordnance through social media imagery. His previous experience includes work as a Research Fellow at Perry World House at the University of Pennsylvania and contributions to international security analysis.
Andro Mathewson’s publications span academic journals, think tank outputs, and open-access commentary. In the Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction, he has authored two articles: “Open‑Source Research and Mapping of Explosive Ordnance Contamination in Ukraine” (2022) and “Explosive Ordnance Risk Education in Ukraine During the COVID‑19 Pandemic” (2021). With Michael C. Horowitz, he co-authored “Competing Visions for the Global Order” in the Texas National Security Review and “A Way to Rein in Drone Proliferation” for the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. Other notable publications include “Seeking Dronations: The Crowdfunded Drone War in Ukraine” (The National Interest, with Lauren Kahn), “Will the Drone War Come?” (Modern War Institute, with Ben Fogel), and “Climate and Maritime Securitisation of the Arctic” (Strife, with Lauren Chin). He has also written on topics ranging from pangolin trafficking (Wavell Room) to uncrewed underwater vehicles (CIMSEC, Wavell Room), and military modernization in Eastern Europe (CSDM Views, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, UK Defence Journal, and The Foreign Analyst).
He holds an MSc in International Relations from the University of Edinburgh, where his research focused on the proliferation of underwater drones, and a BA in Politics, Philosophy & Economics and German from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was affiliated with Perry World House. He is currently completing his PhD in War Studies at King’s College London’s War Studies Department, where his research, supervised by Dr. Jack McDonald and Dr. Hassan Elbahtimy, focuses on emerging military capabilities, open-source intelligence (OSINT), and the character of modern warfare in the Russo-Ukrainian conflict.
