A Ukrainian Baritone Bringing Opera to the World

Mykola Hubchuk is a distinguished Ukrainian baritone, renowned for his rich vocal timbre and dynamic stage presence. His artistic journey encompasses significant roles in opera houses across Ukraine and Europe, reflecting his dedication to the operatic art form.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born in Ukraine, Hubchuk’s musical foundation was laid at the Kolomyia Music School, where he studied violin from 1988 to 1995. He furthered his education at the Kolomyia College of Music between 1995 and 1999, focusing on violin, conducting, and singing. His passion for opera led him to the Lviv National Academy of Music, where he honed his skills as an opera singer and educator from 2000 to 2005. Hubchuk’s professional debut was with the National Opera of Ukraine, serving as a young singer from 2005 to 2008. His exceptional talent earned him a position as a soloist from 2008 to 2014. During this tenure, he portrayed various roles that showcased his versatility and deep understanding of operatic repertoire.  

Professional Career

Post-2014, Hubchuk expanded his horizons, performing in esteemed opera houses and concert halls across Ukraine and Europe, including Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, and France. Notable venues such as the Lviv National Opera House, Cologne Philharmonic, Kyiv Philharmonic, Laeiszhalle Hamburg, Gewandhaus Leipzig, Hercules Hall Munich, and Schubert Hall Vienna have featured his performances. His repertoire encompasses works by composers like Handel, Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, Lysenko, Lyatoshynskyi, and Kos-Anatolskyi.  

Recent Engagements

In 2023, Hubchuk took on the role of Andrey Belaretsky in the world premiere of “King Stakh’s Wild Hunt,” a production by the Belarus Free Theatre. This ambitious project blended opera, theatre, multimedia, and live music, drawing from Eastern European folklore. The production was staged at the Barbican Centre in London, where Hubchuk’s performance was met with critical acclaim.  

Artistic Leadership

Since 2022, Hubchuk has been serving as the Artistic Director and soloist of the Kolomyia Philharmonic. In this role, he has been instrumental in revitalizing the cultural scene of Kolomyia, bringing classical music to a broader audience and nurturing local talent.
